Winter might seem dark, dreary and get you down, but there’s no need to limit your weekends to staying at home and not venturing out. We are so lucky to have an abundance of local getaways to choose from, and all it takes is some planning.
In Cape Town, winter is wet, windy, and wild. But it’s also the perfect excuse to find a warm spot next to the fire and sip on some of the country’s best wines. You can spend the weekend wining and dining in style, and trying some of the top restaurants. There are so many little cottages to visit in Franschhoek, Stellebosch, and Paarl, that a weekend in the vineyards is waiting for you.
You can build a snowman in South Africa, you just need to know where. And the Cederberg is the perfect place to go. The scenery replicates something out of a movie, and some of the hotels date back to the 19th century. The Cederberg is also famous for its warm hospitality. Take a stroll through town, take in the local arts and crafts, and your getaway could just end with some snowfall.
If you’re craving more of a country escape, Clarens in the Free State is perfect! Nicknamed the ‘Jewel of the Eastern Free State’, you’ll see pristine dams, be able to go horseback riding, and so much more. It’s an adventure just waiting to start!
Another area with a country-feel to it is Muldersdrift. You can treat yourself to a spa day at the country parks, and explore Cradle of Humankind for views that span for miles!
One of the best times to enjoy a safari is winter! The bushveld is less dense, and the animals can be spotted easily. The Pilansberg has amazing safaris, and you’ll get a peaceful sanctuary getaway. You can take in a morning or afternoon game drive and learn about the African bushveld animals. Other safari getaways include Port Elizabeth and Durban.
If you’re more of a mountain getaway person, Southern Drakensberg boasts beautiful manors and guesthouses at the foot of South Africa’s highest mountain range!
You can also explore the beach in winter and head down to Port Alfred. Stay right on the beach front and wake up to the wild Easter Cape waves!
Wherever you decide to venture to this winter, do it safey!
